Hegseth proposes contest to choose next US military base
Original: Hegseth calls for contest to decide America's next military base
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has called for a competition to decide the location of America's next military base, according to Axios. The proposal would open siting decisions to a contest rather than the usual internal Pentagon process. Details on timing, criteria, and candidate locations have not been announced, and it remains unclear how the contest would be judged or funded.
Why now: A cabinet secretary proposing an unusual public contest for a major defense siting decision is novel and draws attention.
