El Niño-driven wildfires in Indonesia are devastating orangutan populations, with rescuers reporting severe injuries among displaced animals. One rescued mother, named Mama Abu, suffered peeling hands from walking on torched ground while her eight-month-old baby, Abu, was found dehydrated and malnourished. Conservationists describe the toll as huge, as habitat fires destroy rainforest and force starving orangutans into contact with people.
Why now: Ongoing El Niño wildfires in Indonesia are causing visible, heartbreaking harm to endangered orangutans, prompting rescue efforts and public concern.
