El Niño wildfires devastate Indonesia's orangutan populations
Original: ‘The toll is huge’: El Niño-driven wildfires overwhelm Indonesia’s orangutan population "The mother’s hands were peeling
Wildfires driven by El Niño conditions are overwhelming orangutan rescue efforts in Indonesia, with conservationists describing the toll as huge. Rescued animals show severe injuries and dehydration, including a mother whose hands were peeled from walking on scorched ground while her eight-month-old baby clung to her, thin and dehydrated. The fires are destroying crucial rainforest habitat, leaving orangutans displaced, starving and vulnerable as rescue teams struggle to keep pace with the number of animals affected.
Why now: El Niño-driven fires in Indonesia are causing severe harm to critically endangered orangutans, prompting renewed concern for wildlife and habitat loss.
