UN passes first declaration on sea level rise

Original: "The UN just passed the first declaration on sea level rise, protecting island nations' sovereignty" # UN # UnitedNation

The United Nations has adopted its first declaration addressing sea level rise, a landmark move that affirms the sovereignty of island nations even as rising oceans threaten their land and maritime boundaries. Supporters say the declaration protects low-lying states from losing legal rights to territory and resources, and it is being welcomed as an important win for climate-vulnerable countries.

Why now: It is the first time the UN has formally addressed sea level rise and island nations' sovereignty, a major milestone for climate-vulnerable states.
