UN passes first declaration on sea level rise
Original: "The UN just passed the first declaration on sea level rise, protecting island nations' sovereignty" # UN # UnitedNation
The United Nations has adopted its first declaration addressing sea level rise, a move that affirms the sovereignty of island nations whose territories face being submerged as oceans rise. The declaration is being welcomed by climate advocates as a landmark step, ensuring low-lying states retain their rights and maritime claims even if their land disappears beneath the water.
Why now: It is the first time the UN has formally recognized island nations' sovereignty in the context of rising seas, a major win for climate-vulnerable countries.
