Garden experts urge people to hold off on fall cleanup
Original: Have an urge to ‘clean up’ your garden? Stop! Put down the clippers. There’s another way.
Garden writers in Oregon are telling people to resist the urge to cut back and tidy their gardens this season. Instead of clipping everything down, they recommend leaving seed heads, stems and leaf litter in place, since dormant plants and debris provide food and shelter for pollinators, birds and other beneficial wildlife through the colder months.
Why now: It is the season when many gardeners do fall cleanup, and wildlife-friendly gardening advice challenges the usual routine.
