Garden experts urge people to stop tidying up for wildlife
Original: Have an urge to ‘clean up’ your garden? Stop! Put down the clippers. There’s another way.
Garden writers are telling people to resist the urge to cut back and clear out their gardens, arguing that leaving seed heads, stems and leaf litter in place gives insects and other wildlife shelter through the colder months. The message is that a 'messy' garden does more good than a neatly clipped one, and there is a gentler alternative to a full autumn clean-up.
Why now: Seasonal advice about pollinator-friendly, wildlife-supporting gardening resonates as people do autumn garden maintenance.
