Two American Airlines Flights End Up with the Same Flight Numbers
American Airlines has reportedly assigned the same flight number to two flights operating at the same time, an error that aviation watchers say has happened to the carrier more than once. Duplicate flight numbers can confuse air traffic control, dispatchers and passengers, and are normally avoided through strict airline scheduling checks. Readers are debating how such a lapse could slip through and how common the problem is industry-wide.
Why now: Duplicate simultaneous flight numbers are a rare and safety-relevant scheduling blunder by a major airline.
