Alberta separatists seek U.S. backing for independence bid

Original: How some Alberta separatists are courting U.S. support for independence

Alberta separatist figures have travelled to Washington offering access to the province's fresh water and oil in exchange for American support for independence from Canada. According to reporting, Republican operatives have in turn provided tactical assistance to separatists inside Alberta. The report raises questions about foreign involvement in Canadian politics and has drawn attention to the growing separatist movement in the province.

Why now: Allegations of foreign interference in Canadian sovereignty are politically explosive, especially amid current Canada-U.S. tensions.
