Alberta separatists seek U.S. backing for independence

Original: How some Alberta separatists are courting U.S. support for independence

Alberta separatists have travelled to Washington offering the province's fresh water and oil in exchange for American support for independence from Canada, according to a Globe and Mail report. Republican operatives, the report says, have in turn provided tactical assistance to the separatist movement inside Alberta, drawing attention to foreign involvement in Canadian politics.

Why now: Fresh reporting reveals foreign interference concerns and a renewed Alberta independence push at a sensitive moment in Canada-U.S. relations.
