Claim that only 5,000 elite software engineers exist sparks debate
Original: There are only 5,000 elite software engineers in the world (2025)
A blog post by Jared Palmer argues that only about 5,000 truly elite software engineers exist worldwide in 2025. The piece is drawing attention and skepticism among developers, who are debating how such a number could be measured, what 'elite' means, and whether the claim says more about hiring and talent assessment than actual skill distribution.
Why now: The provocative, hard-to-verify claim about the size of the elite engineering talent pool is fueling argument among developers.
