Benjamin Davis, a former senior official at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, says he was dismissed last week for highlighting hunger in Gaza and has launched an appeal against the decision. His allegations have drawn attention to disputes over how the UN and its agencies handle the food crisis in Gaza, with critics arguing that staff speaking out on famine conditions face retaliation.

Why now: The firing and appeal raise fresh questions about political pressure on UN agencies over Gaza.
