Bear caught on Northern California wildlife crossing before it opens
Original: NorCal wildlife crossing gets first bear sighting before opening
A black bear has become the first animal recorded using a new wildlife crossing in Northern California, before the structure has even officially opened. Cameras spotted the bear crossing the overpass, which is designed to let animals safely pass over or under a highway and reduce vehicle collisions. Officials hope early use by large animals like bears signals the crossing will succeed once fully open to wildlife.
Why now: Early proof that a costly wildlife infrastructure project is already working is encouraging news for conservationists and locals.
