New Jersey Urges Residents to Secure Garbage as Bear Foraging Season Begins
Original: Fish & Wildlife | Residents Urged to Properly Store Garbage and Remove Food Sources to Avoid Attracting Bears as Fall Foraging Season Begins
New Jersey Fish & Wildlife is urging residents to properly store garbage and remove outdoor food sources as bears enter their heavy fall foraging period, when they consume extra calories before winter. Officials warn that unsecured trash, bird feeders and pet food can draw bears into residential areas, increasing the risk of dangerous encounters.
Why now: Bears are actively foraging for winter, raising the risk of human-bear conflicts in residential areas.
