New Jersey Urges Residents to Secure Garbage as Bear Foraging Season Begins
Original: Fish & Wildlife | Residents Urged to Properly Store Garbage and Remove Food Sources to Avoid Attracting Bears as Fall Foraging Season Begins
New Jersey's Fish & Wildlife is asking residents to properly store garbage and remove outdoor food sources as bears enter their intensive fall foraging period, when they consume large amounts of calories before winter. Officials warn that accessible trash, bird feeders and pet food can draw bears into neighborhoods, creating safety risks for people and leading to problem bears being euthanized.
Why now: Bears are ramping up feeding before winter denning, raising the chance of bear encounters in residential areas.
