Why Your Dishwasher Isn't a Robot
Original: "Robot" Is A Social Construct: Why Your Dishwasher Is Not A Robot https://robotgirlgang.com/2026/10/08/robot-is-a-social
A new essay argues that 'robot' is a social construct rather than a technical category, claiming a dishwasher performs automated tasks but lacks the qualities people expect from robots. The piece blends robotics with philosophy, questioning where society draws the line between mere machines and robots, and why that line keeps shifting.
Why now: It sparks debate about how loosely the word 'robot' is used for everyday automated devices.
