'Robot' Is a Social Construct: Why Your Dishwasher Doesn't Qualify
Original: "Robot" Is A Social Construct: Why Your Dishwasher Is Not A Robot https://robotgirlgang.com/2026/10/08/robot-is-a-social
A new essay argues that 'robot' is less a technical category than a social construct, explaining why household machines like dishwashers are not considered robots despite performing automated work. The piece blends robotics and philosophy, probing where people draw the line between mere automation and genuine robotic agency, a boundary that shifts with culture and expectations.
Why now: The argument challenges everyday assumptions about what counts as a robot, sparking debate among robotics and tech communities.
