Cray-1 supercomputer replica built from 30 old Mac Minis

Original: A Cray-1 supercomputer replica from 30 "obsolete" Mac Minis

A hobbyist has built a working replica of the iconic 1970s Cray-1 supercomputer housed inside the machine's distinctive circular casing, using around 30 older Mac Mini computers as the compute hardware. The project turns machines many consider obsolete into a homage to one of computing's most famous designs, and the unusual combination of retro shell and recycled Apple hardware is drawing wide attention.

Why now: The striking contrast of iconic supercomputer design and recycled consumer hardware makes it a compelling maker story.
