Builder creates Cray-1 supercomputer replica from 30 Mac Minis
Original: A Cray-1 supercomputer replica from 30 "obsolete" Mac Minis
A hobbyist has built a working replica of the iconic 1970s Cray-1 supercomputer using around 30 old Mac Mini machines as its computing guts. The project recreates the distinctive circular chassis of Seymour Cray's legendary machine while clustering obsolete Apple hardware to emulate its capabilities. Readers are admiring the blend of retro-futuristic design and modern recycling, debating how much genuine computing power the cluster delivers compared with the original Cray.
Why now: The unusual combination of iconic 1970s supercomputer design and recycled Apple hardware makes for a striking engineering showcase.
