Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that aggressors must be held accountable for ecocide, framing environmental destruction caused by warfare as a crime requiring answerability before international bodies. The statement, spread with tags referencing the UN, the US, Israel, Gaza and the Strait of Hormuz, ties environmental damage to ongoing conflicts and has drawn attention amid wider debate over war crimes and environmental accountability.
Why now: Ongoing wars in the Middle East have pushed claims about wartime environmental destruction into current diplomatic debate.
