Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said those responsible for ecocide must be held accountable, arguing that acts of war causing mass environmental destruction should carry legal consequences. The statement, made in a diplomatic setting, drew attention amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza and the wider region, where environmental damage from bombardment has become part of the debate over accountability and international law.

Why now: Ongoing wars, especially in Gaza, have put environmental destruction caused by military action back on the diplomatic agenda.
