YouTuber who tracks police cars with camera gets police visit
Original: Canadian YouTuber builds 'Flock-like' camera to exclusively track police vehicles, gets a visit from police — officers visit his home to express privacy concerns
A Canadian YouTuber has built a license-plate style camera system that exclusively tracks police vehicles, flipping the surveillance model of automated plate readers back onto law enforcement. After the project drew attention, officers visited his home to raise privacy concerns, reportedly warning that his cameras could allow details of active investigations to reach criminals through shared tracking data. The episode has reignited debate over who should be subject to mass surveillance and whether police can demand privacy from the same tools they use on the public.
Why now: The irony of police citing privacy concerns about surveillance directed at themselves is fuelling debate over mass tracking technology.
