Trump announces partial Ukraine ceasefire, Zelenskyy caught off guard
Original: Trump announces partial ceasefire in Ukraine war as Zelenskyy says deal is ‘news to me’
Donald Trump has announced a partial ceasefire in the Ukraine war, focused on halting strikes on energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the deal was 'news to me', having earlier rejected a US call for Kyiv to stop attacking Russian oil refineries, insisting Moscow must first end its attacks on energy facilities. The mismatch between Washington's announcement and Kyiv's response has fueled confusion over the terms and status of any agreement.
Why now: Conflicting statements from Trump and Zelenskyy over a claimed ceasefire have created uncertainty about the war's diplomatic direction.
