Trump announces partial Ukraine ceasefire; Zelenskyy caught off guard
Original: Trump announces partial ceasefire in Ukraine war as Zelenskyy says deal is ‘news to me’
Donald Trump has announced a partial ceasefire in the war in Ukraine, covering strikes on energy infrastructure. But President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded that the deal was 'news to me', saying he had earlier rejected a US call for Kyiv to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries unless Moscow first stopped hitting Ukrainian energy facilities. The conflicting statements have raised fresh doubts about the state of US-brokered talks and Kyiv's involvement in negotiations.
Why now: Contradictory messages from Trump and Zelenskyy have created uncertainty about whether any ceasefire agreement actually exists and what Ukraine agreed to.
