New radiocarbon dates rewrite the history of the Inca Empire
Original: Bonanza of new dates rewrites the history of the Inca
A wave of fresh radiocarbon dates is forcing historians to revise the timeline of the Inca Empire, suggesting the civilisation expanded and developed differently than long believed. The findings, reported in Science, challenge established chronologies of how quickly the Inca rose to dominate the Andes before the Spanish conquest, prompting debate among archaeologists about the empire's true pace of growth.
Why now: New archaeological dating results challenge the accepted timeline of one of South America's most famous empires.
