New radiocarbon dates rewrite Inca history
Original: Bonanza of new dates rewrites the history of the Inca
A wave of new radiocarbon dates is prompting archaeologists to revise the established timeline of the Inca Empire. The findings suggest the empire's expansion happened earlier and faster than previously believed, requiring historians to rethink how quickly a small Andean kingdom became South America's largest pre-Columbian state.
Why now: New archaeological dating research is overturning long-accepted assumptions about the Inca Empire's rise, making it a notable science story.
