Pentagon allows DHS to test heat ray weapon at border
Original: Pentagon grants DHS permission to test heat ray weapon for use at border
The Pentagon has given the Department of Homeland Security permission to test a heat ray weapon, an directed-energy device that projects a heating beam to disperse crowds, for possible use at the US border with Mexico. The move raises immediate concerns about the militarisation of border enforcement and the safety of migrants and demonstrators, with critics comparing it to the device briefly considered for use against protesters in Washington in 2020.
Why now: The prospect of military-grade directed-energy weapons being deployed against migrants at the US border is controversial and newly authorised.
