Pentagon lets DHS test heat ray weapon at border
Original: Pentagon grants DHS permission to test heat ray weapon for use at border
The Pentagon has given the Department of Homeland Security approval to test a heat ray weapon, a directed-energy device that projects a painful burning sensation, for possible use at the US southern border. The plan has drawn sharp criticism from rights groups who argue the technology, developed for crowd control, could cause serious injuries to migrants. Debate is focused on whether such weapons belong in border enforcement.
Why now: The approval of a military crowd-control weapon for border use is raising fresh concerns about treatment of migrants and militarisation of the border.
