Pentagon approves heat ray weapon testing at US border
Original: Pentagon grants DHS permission to test heat ray weapon for use at border
The Pentagon has given the Department of Homeland Security permission to test an directed-energy 'heat ray' weapon for possible use at the US border. The device, known as an active denial system, heats the skin's surface to compel people to move away without causing lasting injury. The move is drawing criticism from civil liberties groups and immigration advocates who question the safety and legality of deploying such weapons against migrants.
Why now: The prospect of a microwave-based crowd control weapon being deployed against migrants at the border is highly controversial.
