Scientists recreate 1,600-year-old Lycurgus Cup recipe
Original: Sculpture re-creates odd optical effects of famed Lycurgus Cup
A sculpture has been made to reproduce the striking optical effects of the Roman Lycurgus Cup, the 4th-century glass vessel that appears green in reflected light and red when lit from within. Ars Technica reports on efforts to recreate the ancient recipe behind the color-changing glass, which owes its properties to tiny gold and silver particles embedded in the material.
Why now: The blending of ancient nanotechnology, art and modern scientific recreation is capturing wide interest
