Sculpture re-creates optical effects of Lycurgus Cup
Original: Sculpture re-creates odd optical effects of famed Lycurgus Cup
A new sculpture reproduces the striking optical behaviour of the Roman Lycurgus Cup, the 1,600-year-old glass vessel that appears green in reflected light and red when light passes through it. Scientists have reportedly recreated the ancient recipe behind the effect, which relies on tiny gold and silver particles embedded in the glass, drawing wide interest in the history of ancient nanotechnology.
Why now: Fresh reporting on scientists recreating the ancient recipe has renewed fascination with the Roman cup's unusual colour-changing properties
