Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
Russia has reportedly upgraded its Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones with jet engines, making them faster and harder for Ukrainian air defenses to intercept. The modified drones travel at higher speeds than the original propeller-driven versions, compressing the time available to detect and shoot them down. Coverage of the development, including a detailed technical analysis by IEEE Spectrum, is drawing attention to the growing effectiveness of Russia's cheap, mass-produced strike drones against Ukraine's defenses.
Why now: A new technical report highlights a weapons upgrade that appears to outpace Ukrainian air defense capabilities, raising concerns about the evolving drone war.
