US envoy Witkoff tells Putin 'you are a humanitarian'
Original: US envoy Witkoff to Putin: 'You are a humanitarian ... I salute that'
US special envoy Steve Witkoff praised Vladimir Putin in flattering terms, telling the Russian president he was 'a humanitarian' and adding 'I salute that'. The remarks came amid American efforts to broker an end to the war in Ukraine, and the warm language toward the Kremlin leader has drawn criticism and ridicule from observers who see it as an unwarranted compliment to a leader facing war crimes accusations.
Why now: The unusually flattering remarks by a US envoy toward Putin are striking at a time when Washington is negotiating over the war in Ukraine.
