US envoy Witkoff flatters Putin as 'humanitarian'
Original: US envoy Witkoff to Putin: 'You are a humanitarian ... I salute that'
Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy, reportedly told Vladimir Putin he was a 'humanitarian' and said 'I salute that,' according to Politico. The remark has drawn attention because of its unusually complimentary tone toward the Russian president amid ongoing US efforts to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
Why now: The flattering language toward Putin is striking at a time when the US is brokering peace talks over Ukraine.
