US envoy Witkoff tells Putin 'you are a humanitarian'

Original: US envoy Witkoff to Putin: 'You are a humanitarian ... I salute that'

Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy, reportedly told Vladimir Putin in direct talks: 'You are a humanitarian... I salute that.' The remarks, reported by Politico, are drawing criticism as unusually flattering language toward the Russian president at a time when Washington is pressing for a deal to end the war in Ukraine.

Why now: The envoy's glowing praise of Putin is striking amid sensitive US-led negotiations over the Ukraine war.
