US envoy Witkoff praises Putin as 'humanitarian' in talks

Original: US envoy Witkoff to Putin: 'You are a humanitarian ... I salute that'

US special envoy Steve Witkoff told Vladimir Putin, 'You are a humanitarian ... I salute that,' according to Politico. The remark, from the Trump administration's envoy leading negotiations over Ukraine, is drawing criticism for flattering the Kremlin leader amid ongoing attacks and stalled peace efforts.

Why now: The unusually warm praise for Putin by a US official is controversial given Russia's war in Ukraine
