Debate over idle PC memory amid DRAM shortage
Original: RAM wasted on users PCs.. should be concentrated on datacenters
A Hacker News debate is arguing that the world's limited DRAM supply is badly allocated, with most of it sitting idle inside personal computers that use only a fraction of their capacity at any given time. Commenters argue that, from a global allocation perspective, memory would be better concentrated in datacenters where utilization is maximized, as chip shortages make every gigabyte count.
Why now: Ongoing DRAM supply constraints and price rises are prompting people to question how memory should be allocated globally
