Debate over whether personal PC RAM should move to datacenters
Original: RAM wasted on users PCs.. should be concentrated on datacenters
A Hacker News discussion is weighing whether the world's limited DRAM supply is being wasted in personal computers that sit largely idle, arguing memory should be concentrated in cloud datacenters for maximum utilization. The debate comes amid ongoing memory supply constraints and rising prices driven by AI datacenter demand, prompting questions about the efficiency of keeping billions of underused RAM chips on individual desks worldwide.
Why now: Memory supply constraints and rising RAM prices driven by AI datacenter demand have reignited debate about efficient allocation of DRAM
