Lithuanian woman's open letter urges students to study Soviet history
Original: "Study history thoroughly" Lithuanian woman to hammer and sickle waving students
A Lithuanian woman has published an open letter addressed to students who wave the hammer and sickle, telling them to 'study history thoroughly'. The letter, which draws on Lithuania's experience of Soviet occupation, has been praised by Italian readers after being shared internationally. Commenters argue that younger people displaying communist symbols often know little about the repression and deportations those regimes carried out in the Baltic states and Eastern Europe.
Why now: Her blunt rebuke of students romanticising Soviet symbols has resonated across borders, sparking debate about historical memory and ignorance of communist-era crimes.
