Lithuanian woman tells hammer and sickle waving students to study history
Original: "Study history thoroughly" Lithuanian woman to hammer and sickle waving students
A Lithuanian woman has published an open letter urging students who wave the Soviet hammer and sickle flag to "study history thoroughly." The letter has drawn praise from Italian readers, with commentators agreeing that the symbol's meaning under Soviet rule is often poorly understood by young people. The exchange touches on ongoing European debates over how Communist-era symbols should be treated compared with fascist ones.
Why now: Young protesters displaying Soviet symbols have reignited debate over historical memory of communism in Europe.
