Lithuanian woman tells students waving hammer and sickle to study history
Original: "Study history thoroughly" Lithuanian woman to hammer and sickle waving students
A Lithuanian woman has published an open letter urging students who wave the Soviet hammer and sickle to 'study history thoroughly'. The letter has drawn praise from Italian readers, with commentary noting resonance across Europe about young people displaying Soviet symbols without awareness of their meaning under communist rule. Lithuania, which experienced Soviet occupation and deportations, remains sensitive to such imagery, and the letter has become a talking point about historical memory and education.
Why now: The open letter's spread and praise abroad have renewed debate about Soviet symbolism and historical awareness among young Europeans
